Neighborhood Weather Watchdog

Keeping Bridgeberry Owners Safe And Aware

Automated notices are generated by actual weather conditions that are detected by specialized equipment right here in our neighborhood. This equipment is located on Trautz Lane and constantly monitors and records real time weather data. You can access and bookmark this local weather station on your mobile device for easy access anytime. Current conditions data is publicly available via Weatherflow and WeatherUnderground. For up-to-the-second information, I recommend the Weatherflow link, as you can see conditions update with much greater frequency. The NodeRED based watchdog is far more reliable and fast in detecting changes and pipelining them for transmission.

How To Subscribe To Bridgeberry Weather Alerts

I decided to stop sending these alerts to the homeowners email distro. These alerts are now completely “Opt In” going forward. If you want to receive these alerts, you will need to download the Pushover app (available for both iPhone and Android). NOTE: Pushover does charge a ONE-TIME $5.00 fee after their trial period. They used to be free if you were a low volume user, but I guess they have to pay the bills somehow. This one-time fee is a lifetime entitlement license per platform. ie. if you are using iOS devices, you pay the fee once and can use your pushover account on any iOS device you own. Same with Android. There are no other fees after that, and it’s still a good deal since Pushover is incredibly reliable, and one of the best apps for receiving push messages.

  1. Once you have Pushover app installed, open the app, and create your account or login if you already have a pushover account.
  2. After you have the app and your account, you can either click on or scan the QR code to subscribe to the Bridgeberry Weather group on Pushover.
  3. Login to your pushover account to confirm the subscription, you’re done.

I decided to go this route because, while many appreciated the safety convenience offered by the alerts, not everyone wanted to receive them, so they are now only available via Pushover. Scan the QR code here:

For you and your kid’s safety, we notify on the following weather conditions when they become true:

  • Wind gusts in excess of 20MPH (one alert/10 hour period)
  • Approaching lightning, within 12 miles of Bridgeberry (1 alert/hourly period)
  • Rainfall Start (1 alert/12 hour period)
  • UV Index of 8.0 and higher (1 alert when threshold of 8.0 is exceeded, and 1 alert when UV drops to safe level)

In these cases, the alerts are generated once per period, and if the conditions expire, the alerts time out and do not repeat. If the conditions continue beyond the reporting period window, then the alert will repeat with the new current value that exceeds the threshold. These thresholds can be adjusted if necessary, or desired, but the current thresholds are generally reasonable for safety alerting and awareness.

What To Do When You Receive An Alert

When you receive any one of these alerts, it is a good idea to follow the advice in the alerts, and if you have a BBCW or a weather radio, you may wish to keep an ear out for additional alerts or messages broadcast by NOAA, Duke, etc. BBCW does transmit all localized public hazard messages without delay on CH16, so if you have one of these radios (and you really should) you already have the best tool to stay in touch with your neighbors and other information during any emergencies. The BBCW, and this alerting data processing always will continue to function in the event of a loss of grid power. Our on-site generator ensures these systems will keep working unhindered when your power goes out.
